Don't be fooled. This article is not about the keyboard shortcuts on your computer. It's actually about an event that took place this weekend: a macro spamming campaign by a single individual with the goal of reaching and executing vulnerablities in Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy 10. This post is intended as a warning to those still playing through either game today, as well as those who may want to pick them up for nostalgia. In it I will discuss what happened, provide some more information on this particular player, and offer advice on how you can avoid recurrence of such events in your own games. For those of you who are interested in the technical aspects of how he accomplished these things, read on! If not, this post will make little sense. Final Fantasy 9 The individual in question (who I will henceforth refer to as "he" or "him") had previously hacked Final Fantasy 10 to enable him to cast spells via macro spam. This is an old trick, but it's always annoying. Shortly after his original hack was patched out of the game, he moved on to greener pastures: Final Fantasy 9. He had many ideas for how he might be able to skip the tedious and repetitive sidequests in FF9, and naturally he wanted to test them out. This is when "he" started his macro spamming campaign. 1) He made progress on the Chocobo breeding minigame. The goal here was simply to get enough breeding points for Chocobos that could reach level 30, which is required to reach the endgame areas of FF9. This process took about 16 hours to complete, although there were several errors along the way - mostly due to his lack of patience. 2) He worked on raising his character's strength to a level where he could take down any boss in the game with relative ease. This took a few days to complete. This portion of the campaign is a bit convoluted, so I'll try to keep it as concise as possible. a) He tried raising the Strength stat one level at a time in an attempt to raise it "as close to 30" as possible without actually reaching the value of 30. As he worked through this process, he made mistakes that prevented him from reaching his goal - one of these being accidentally deleting his character's "Strength" save file in the progress. He then started over - this time trying to use the level up ability that only took 10 strength, instead of the stat up that took 20 strength. This meant that at any given time "he's" Strength was between 20 and 30 - but not 30. b) He also made mistakes along this process involving his level. This led to him never attaining his original goal for this stat, which was to reach body stat of about 1000. Regrettably, he let too much time pass before working on raising his character's level again - leading to a second botched attempt at regaining the desired Strength value. This meant that his Strength would be between 1 and 30 whenever he leveled up, but never quite reach 30 points. 60cfa1e7782057
