If you've seen the film, "The Butterfly Effect" (2004) or "Memento" (2000), then you'll know that the stories unfold in reverse order. There's even a movie called "Irreversible" that tells the story backwards. Perhaps this is what made Paul Haggis want to give it a try with this film. That said, there are two versions of Irreversible: one version where the events are played in chronological order and one where they're played in reverse. The version I saw was the chronological version and I'm not sure which one is better, but I suspect it's the reverse version. The only problem with this film is that it's almost too painful to watch. It's a powerful piece of cinema and you really feel for these characters. It's brutal, ugly and depressing. Some of the harsh language is quite jarring, but I guess that adds to the realism of the film. If I could use one word to describe the film as a whole, I'd use "brutal."The DVD is nearly flawless, with a very impressive 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen image and a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that will knock your socks off!The movie itself is a bit on the long side (2 hours and 8 minutes) but it never feels boring. In fact, it kind of seems short, because you're so wrapped up in the drama of the film. It certainly keeps you on edge throughout its duration. The violence is very realistic and there were a few parts where I had to get up from the couch. That's how disturbing the story was. The only thing I would've done differently is have a few more deleted scenes included on the DVD, but that's just a personal preference. If you're a fan of movies that are hard to watch, you should check this out. It's not for everyone though. The movie covers a lot of ground and it's one of those kinds of movies that gets even more intense as it goes along. It's a debut film that showcases what Haggis has to offer, but it's not a perfect work of art. It's totally visceral and disturbing in many ways, but still the kind of movie you can totally get into. There are some scenes where you'll want to cover your eyes, but when you do, they're usually rewarding. The DVD is so good that unless you own this disc already then I'd say just go see it in the theater because that's really all there is to it.If you're looking for violence and graphic scenes in your movies then this one will be right up your alley!- Reviewed by Joe Bob on cinematical.com - http://www. cfa1e77820
